FAQ (clothing guidelines)
Ok on to the show!
So with the exciting changes with the age of missionaries, the statistics are crazy, the mission field is getting a rush of missionaries of all ages. It is an exciting time for the church and the world. I thought it would be helpful to talk about sister missionary wardrobe as so many ladies face the question "what will I wear.... for a year and a half?" I always thought it would be very hard to leave behind a wardrobe full of clothes, and limit yourself to only what fits in a suitcase. I tried to put myself in the missionary shoes, and think how I would be able to do that, what would I need, what clothes would work best, and how would I do it.
Well I have shopped around, found some cute outfit ideas for missionaries, and I even created what my missionary wardrobe would be. My "imaginary missionary wardrobe" If you want to know what I would pack, or get more ideas on what to bring, be sure to read my post on my missionary wardrobes (click here to read)
Be sure to watch the segment to learn more! If you missed it read the main points below, and stay tuned as I will be uploading a clip of the show soon!
Points from the show:
What do you look for in a Sister missionary outfit/ wardrobe?
First and for-most Modesty & meeting the guidelines. I also try to find something affordable (can be a little more expensive if an investment piece), something that will last long (construction, as well as style), something that is comfy, not fussy, and fun.
Where do you find modest/ fashionable dresses?
For me I always start at Shabby Apple, because they are a modest ready-to-wear company, which means no layering, no fuss, almost all dresses go to the knees and have sleeves. Sistermissionaryclothes.com also have some one of a kind, girly, colorful fun dresses! I also love Mr.Mac for printed or knit dresses, Bella Ella for those trendy fun looks, and Plato's closet for affordable everyday dresses.
Where can I find layering pieces, the essentials and the unique?
Well, DownEast Basics has all your standard essential tops & tanks (and in fun bright colors too) I also LOVE Kingdom and State for slips (WITH sleeves!!!) and I found some AMAZING silk & lace skirt slips at Bella Ella. If you are looking for leggings of any color, We Love Colors is your shop, I love using these as thermals, tights, or plain old leggings.
What do you mean personalizing your wardrobe/look?
For me, (and I think for everyone) it is important to be true to myself, and dress in a way that makes me feel like me. So obviously because everyone is unique that will mean something different to each person. Think about what makes you happy, what outfits make you feel pretty, and what makes you feel comfortable Build your wardrobe around that. For me that means, making each outfit unquie, through statement necklaces, colors, prints & embellishments, one of a kind "boutique" or thrift store items, and adding lots of layering & leggings.
Where can you find the items from the show?
All the clothes & accessories from the show were from....
Shabby Apple, Mr. Mac, Bella Ella Boutique, Plato's Closet (The Draper & Taylorsville locations!)SisterMissionaryClothes.com (Sorella Bella), DownEast Basics, & We Love Colors.
Statement Baubles, PinkTownUSA, Windsor Store, Lysse, Kingdom and State, Spirithoods, Warm Legwear & We Love Colors.
LOOK everywhere! You don't have to only shop at stores that only sell
missionary clothes (but its always a good start) Also checkout modest companies, or even the mall, department stores and online you can find all sorts or items for you mission. Take your time, give yourself months of shopping so you can kind items you LOVE, also make a plan of what you need and how much you are willing to spend.
What would I plan on bringing if I was headed on a mission? Consider....
Weather & climate
Quality (should last 2 years or longer)
Meets missionary guidelines.
Travels well, doesn't take up too much space
Professional, conservative
Easy care, wash & wrinkles
My finds:
Leggings! (I found a million styles, colors, types of leggings) for the cold winter months, wear these under boots, with knee length or maxi skirts to keep warm! (found at Bella Ella Boutique & Lysse) My favorite shop for COLORFUL leggings is We Love Colors of course!
Scarves (change up the look of an outfit, play with prints, show your creative side, show your personality with fun accessories, they don't take up much room!) LOVE Plato's closet for this!
Dresses, knit vs. woven for your mission, Knits can look casual and can wrinkle, be sure to get something silky or jersey knit (wear a slip if needed as some dresses can be a bit thin and clingy) I found some AWESOME knit dresses at Mr. Mac, DownEast Basics & Plato's Closet. For woven styles I love Shabby Apple, they look professional, flattering, and chic.
Accessories You really don't need a whole bunch of jewelry but bringing a few amazing, colorful statement necklaces (I shop at Statement Baubles), scarves, and bracelets will help you change up boring outfits and add a bit of flair, I would suggest Bella Ella Boutique, they have AMAZING trendy fun jewelry for affordable prices.
Your personal style, find ways to stick to the guidelines, while wearing what makes you feel like you, beautiful, comfortable, and at home. Instead of getting homesick, pack a little bit of your old life and home with you. You might have some items in your closet that will work for your mission, and don't feel like your mission wardrobe needs to be boring.
LAST! To save money, find looks that you will actually want to wear after your mission, you will be investing alot of money on these new looks, so be sure they fit, are your style, and something you will want to wear for 2 years (and hopefully longer). Take your time shopping, looks everywhere online & in stores, and plan months in advance, make a shopping list, and be sure to check with your mission leader on specific needs!

I love love love this look, if I was a sister missionary this is what I would wear. I am all about bright colors, and mixing prints. You could easily tone this look down a bit by leaving out the scarf (or switching it out for a solid color) or even switching the cardi out for something neutral or solid.
Outfit # 2 Worn by Brynlee

This is an example of mixing prints, but keeping it conservative (ok, by my standards.... with neutral shades) You can easily mix and match blacks & white prints, but for variety, bring in some neutral greys, navys, khaki & creams. Add some fun accent colors & embellishments to make it modern.

So I love love love color, You can still wear color on your mission, but I think you have to be smart about it. I tried to create a look that satisfied my colorful cravings, but keeping it in check by using colors that are harmonious, but sticking to warm colors, and colors that are next to eachother on the color wheel (Purple, Red, & Orange) You create a look that is pulled together. I then added a pop of color with the mint necklace, because it is just a little accessorie it isn't too much. I also matched the leggings (We Love Colors, literally has every color, so if you want to create this look, check them out) to the dress so it is a bit mono-chromatic, and the focus stays at the top of the look, giving it a focal point.

I love prints & patterns, and I love the fact that in the new styled looks for sister missionaries on LDS.org the looks have prints! You can still wear prints while on a mission, I tried to keep the prints more conservative, and player around with color, sticking to shades of caramel, navy and turquoise. This look would be perfect for summer or any mission with nice weather (but you can easily bring in winter layers to wear this look anywhere.
I love Chanel. I wish I could afford Chanel, something about Chanel is so lady-like, and chic, I feel like it was an easy way to dress modest and professional... and stylish. If you want to recreate this look try to find gorgeous black, white & cream pieces, play with textures to keep things interesting, and don't forget to bring in any lace, chiffon, silk or crisp details like a peter-pan color. Oh and you can't have a Chanel look without the pearls, be sure to layer them on. Bella Ella Boutique has LOADS or gorgeous pearls, in the standard white color, or for a modern look try out their BRIGHT colorful strands.
